Attractions and entertainment

Many of the attractions in Varna are unique in Bulgaria not only in Bulgaria but also on the Balkan Peninsula. We present them briefly.

Zoo Varna

The Varna Zoo was built between 1958 and 1961 and was opened for visitors on April 30, 1961. It is located in the heart of the Sea Garden near the Dolphinarium and the Natural Science Museum. Its first inhabitants are the bear Maxim, donated by the sailors of the squadron “G. Dimitrov “in 1956, and the noble deer Longoz.

Zoo – Varna has over 60 types of exhibits, represented by about 300 animals.

Dolphinarium Varna

Festa Dolphinarium is the only attraction facility in Bulgaria. It is set amidst greenery in the northern part of the Sea Garden, with great sea views.

It was found on 11.08.1984 and is one of the symbols not only of Varna but also of Bulgarian tourism.

The first dolphins arrived in 1984 from the Cuban Dolphinarium.

Currently, 5 Dolphins are grown in Festa Dolphinarium – 2 males and 3 females. Two of them were born in the dolphinarium.

Aquarium Varna

Aquarium Varna is a center for popularization of the Black Sea flora and fauna, the hydrological and hydrochemical features of the Black Sea.

The live exposition of the Aquarium covers representatives of all groups that make up the fauna of the Black Sea, as well as many freshwater fish and some exotic representatives.

In the exhibition halls, you can see and stuffed representatives from the World Ocean, trace the fish migration, visualize the food chain in the sea waters, the structure and the features of the Black Sea.

Nuclear Astronomical Observatory and Planetarium “Nikolay Copernik”

The Planetarium is also one of the sights in Varna. It is an astronomical observatory, equipped with a star room, a tower with a Foucault pendulum and others.

It is next to the main entrance of the Sea Garden. Since its construction in 1968, the building has not changed its designation to a science education institution dedicated to the observation and study of the celestial bodies in the universe.

Prognostic village “Fanagoria”

The historical and ethnographic complex of the Proto-Bulgarian village of Fanagoria is the only open-air museum in the country. The complex is a copy of a Proto-Bulgarian battlefield from the 6th to the 8th century and includes wooden firewalls with battle towers, furnished yurts, acting craft workshops, restored antique suits, armaments, household items and furnishings. A square with a shrine, a han and a shaman’s yurts, a shooting range and a stand for viewers are shaped.
